In My Kitchen
Date: 05/08/2011

A fine summer afternoon, and by that it means it was hot, saw them sitting under a shade. Half an hour had passed since lunchtime, yet neither moved to eat a morsel. The reason being they hadn't prepared lunch. They blamed the sun for making them lazy, in spite of knowing that it was the boredom of their kitchen routine.
'Let's order a pizza.’ she said at length.
Her companion gave threw her a disconsolate look. ''We are eligible to make our own meal, Asra',
Asra, being the laziest of the pair, did not want to go to lengths to prepare lunch. She decided to try another way of getting food without having to do much.
'Su, remember what you told me about the 'must haves' in a kitchen?’ she started.
'Yes. What about it?'
'Well... Say it one more time. Please.’ she cried in a child-like voice. 'I'll make lunch for us if you do.'
'You're just saying that. I know you wont, you lazy lady.’ replied Su.
Silence fell between the two girls. Once or twice they looked at each other. One pleading the other denying.
'Oh! C'mon! Just once.' persisted Asra.
'Oh alright! Last time.' came the reply.

And thus began Su, the basics of kitchen.

'There are times when you don’t feel like running down the street when you are hungry or maybe you are just tired of eating the same regular stuff or maybe you want to watch your waistline. On times like these, your kitchen comes to your rescue- that is if you stock it right!! No one can rustle up a yummy dish with just a box of baking soda in the fridge.

Here are a few things that can jazz up any boring dish instantly:

Ketchup: I know many culinary experts consider it to be a disaster, but let’s face it. Use it on a sandwich or with fries or even plain noodles, things taste yummy.

So stop being uptight about it and stock up on some ketchup.

Vinegar: yummy as a salad dressing or can be used on many quick fix noodle recipes.

Chilly vinegar: you can make this yourself or buy it from a store. Pour it on anything from cucumber to beets. (It even makes muli –radish taste good!). So an instant quick fix for weight watchers.

Shezwan sauce: my personal favourite. It brings everything to life.

Fresh green herbs: coriander, mint, fenugreek (methi) etc these are good for health, give the dish a very pretty appearance, and add flavour to the food.

Coco powder: you want to make instant chocolate type desserts all the time

Flavouring agents: vanilla, mixed fruit, pineapple etc... Whatever you can find in the store.

Well those are pretty much it. You can have some other stuff too. To each his own, u'know.'

'You forgot salt, pepper, sugar...' started Asra.
'Silly! That's goes by default now doesn't it? Come now! I'll make us a tasty bowl of pasta.'
'Sprinkled with chilly vinegar?'
'Oh yeah!'

And thus their dry summer afternoon turned into a spicy one. You see, Su and Asra have the stuff to spice their meals in their kitchen. You can have it too! Get these basics right, and  Be the Best.
